Steps to Setting up a Club - Invite an interested group to meet at an inaugural meeting
- Appoint a committee (Chair, Treasurer, Secretary plus at least three others).
- Take Minutes and adopt a constitution
(The above steps allow you to open a bank account). Then sell membership, the success of which is based on why the club is set up and focused around a programme of activities. Insurance Depending on the type of club i.e. the amount of activities you undertake on behalf of the membership you would need to consider if you require 'Club Officials and Trustees Cover'. We have a document re Insurance on our website (http://www.sailing.ie/inside/default.asp?pageId=83) but the specific element that concerns you would be... "Club Officials and Trustees have the same duty of care in the performance of their responsibilities as do the directors and officers of trading companies. In line with increased responsibilities for directors under the Companies Act 1990, the courts are also applying higher standards of care to trustees who face increasing risk of personal injury. Officials of such bodies can be held personally liable for failure to perform their duties, putting their personal assets at risk. There is an insurance package that can protect officials and their organisation, against claims brought against them for alleged mismanagement." This type of insurance can range from 600-1000 euros but really depends on the activities you undertake. E.g. telling people about a training day on Lough Derg is not the same risk as inviting people to go out on the water for a club day out. Our new insurance scheme should bring savings here!
Consitution Did I point you towards the sample constitution on our website at http://www.sailing.ie/inside/default.asp?pageId=84. To affiliate to the ISA as a category one club you must be a constituted club. But you can amend the constitution to suit your needs and further amend as your club evolves. Our constitution does refer to sailing as the boats or activities but the ISA defines sailing as a boat powered by engine or wind. You can change that reference to Powerboating – but then again thing of the future club developments? Should it be left open? Membership Fee You will need your membership fees to cover your costs and it therefore directly relates to the activities you plan. Calculate annual expenditure and divide by potential membership to get individual rate. It’s always easier to over than under estimate as extra funds can be invested in 2008 activites but increasing fees substantially never goes down well.
